Shishi-kamu Lion maetate
Striking maetate, shaped as a red faced shishi-kamu, the Biting Lion, in excellent shape. A maetate is the frontal ornament used for a Japanese warrior helmet (kabuto). Those ornaments were made in very light material so as to not unbalance the helmet and be a nuisance. Consequently maetate have been often destroyed or lost, and artisans have been constantly made replacement for collectors, often using stronger material. This maetate has been carefully kept in a custom made box, with some writing reading 加州住吉四三郎右衛門直道 (Kaju Ju Yoshi?? Saburoemon Naomichi).
