Benzaiten
Benzaiten portrait signed Shimizu Gyokushu 清水玉舟. This ink and watercolour on paper was presented at the 20th Autumn salon of Nihonga-in in November 1999.
Benzaiten is one of the Seven God of bliss in Japanese pantheon, and the only woman. Coming from the Hindu goddess Saraswati of flowing water, in Japan she is considered as the deity of eloquence, learning, writing and fine arts especially music. She could be compared to Minerva goddess in Greece. She is also popular as a deity of beauty, and she is often depicted holding a Biwa, a traditional Japanese lute.
This large portrait of Benzaiten is particularly charming for the peaceful face of the goddess embellished with a gentle smile. 1919?-2006
