Fireplace screen 衝立
Obviously this is not originally used as a fireplace screen in Japan as there is no wall fireplace in Japanese house. It is called Tsuitate (衝立), meaning standing screen, and usually used to block a pathway in large house, or to symbolically divide two sides of a large room. Gorgeously decorated with shishi lion and peonies on one side and cranes in the other side, sculpted in Japanese cypress (hi-noki). The frame has been repaired on one side, and there is some minor damage on the sculpture. Meiji era.
