Genroku jar topped with a leopard shishi
Large oviform jar on footring, high shoulder,
wide upright neck. High domed cover with wide
everted rim, a finial modeled as a “shishi” seated
on a branch. Imari decorated in underglaze blue,
iron-red and gold. On the shoulder a cloud-like
shape with 6 flower basket filled with peonies
on a background of flowers and golden arabesques.
On the body, large red and gold peonies and other
flowers. On the neck a landscape scene with pavilions
and temples. The “shishi” on top is treated in
gold with (green) spot, as a leopard. Although
the jar is in perfect shape, the cover has been
repaired, most likely in Europe as the repaired
area under the “shishi” shows the characteristic
aging creamed color of a very old European porcelain
repair.
