Hirado Hare!
A beautiful Hirado porcelain small plate hand decorated in blue and white underglase and green enamel with a classic motif of a hare jumping over the waves. The story comes from the Kojiki (Japan’s oldest history book). In the tale “Inaba no Shiro-usagi,” or the “White Rabbit of Inaba” a white rabbit crossed the ocean from Okino Island to the mainland by using the backs of sharks as stepping stones and thus appeared to be running over the tops of the waves. It is also the theme of a Noh song. This plate date from Meiji era.
